Service Dog

Logan

Logan joined the Syd's Para Quest team in June of 2019 at the age of 3. He was trained by Terry Hardy at High Standards Service Dogs. He had huge paws to fill as Journey's successor dog, and he happily stepped up to the plate and then some! Logan quickly became my best friend from the moment I first met him!

All In One

Pictured above All In One, an 11 year old Hanoverian and Katie Robicheaux my trainer. All In One, who’s barn name is Alle, joined the Syd’s ParaQuest team in June of 2019. Kai Handt, from NTEC, found Alle on one of his many trips to Germany looking for horses. My sponsor, Georgina Bloomberg,  purchased him for me as my mount to ride towards selection for the 2020 Paralympic team. When I ride Alle I am free of many limitation that my body wants to place upon me. Alle continues to prove himself to be an incredibly talented horse in and out of the show ring and together we are going for the Gold! I am immensely grateful to Georgina Bloomberg and every product sponsor that is Part of team Para Quest!

In Loving Memory

Journey

"In loving memory of the best service dog a girl could ever ask for...I don't even know where to start or what words to write...I never thought I would be writing this post so unexpectedly...you were a part of my body and my soul you gave me so much freedom,

ABOUT SYDNEY

I started riding at the age of 7 and instantly fell in love. A wonderful school horse named May who taught me the basics and introduced me to competitive riding. Shortly after I began riding, a routine vision screening changed my life in ways I could not have imagined. Within weeks I was diagnosed with the rare Wyburn-Mason Syndrome, a life threatening condition that causes arteries and veins to grow together causing vascular malformations (AVMs) inside my brain. Because of their location, deep in my brain, my AVMs could not be easily removed. The rarity of Wyburn-Mason Syndrome  meant few options were available for treatment.

The AVMs quickly began affecting my vision and the control of my left side. I was at an extremely high risk for dangerous hemorrhage. With a lack of treatment options near my home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I traveled to Stanford University Medical Center in California for expermental medical treatment. Over the course of eight years I endured a series of experimental treatments including CyberKnife radiation, blood vessel embolization and brain surgery. During a risky brain surgery in 2009, I suffered a devastating and massive stroke. Despite this setback, I entered a rehabilitation center and was determined to get out of my wheelchair and return to the sport of riding.

Outreach and awards

Giving back to the community is as important to me as my personal riding goals!

Public Speaking

Motivating others proved to be important part of healing after my stroke. While I was in physical therapy, my therapist asked me to talk with new patients and share my how I learned that despite the changes my stroke caused I still believed I could achieve my goals. Sharing my story and seeing how it helped other patients gave me the idea that I could use my experiences of dealing with my "new body" to inspire and educate others. Public speaking became a natural outlet to use as a platform to encourage others to never give up on their goals.

I enjoy spreading my message to diverse groups with a range of interests inside and outside of the equestrian community.  My motivational speeches focus on using ones ability to pursue goals regardless of circumstances that might appear to be roadblocks.  I focus on using the powers of drive, determination, and adaptability to shape and achieve your goals.  I believe strongly in the power of "CAN" while helping to redefine  the label of "disabled".  I would love to come and speak at your next meeting! Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Giving Back

I first started volunteering in the special education classroom at my middle school. When I was asked to help with summer school I happily accepted. I absolutely loved working with the students. It was natural for me to continue volunteering throughout high school and eventually during my college career. When I moved to New York I began volunteering at the Dutchess BOCES, Salt Point Educational Center. Working in the BOCES classroom was an incredibly rewarding experience for me as I look towards my future career in disability advocacy. Volunteering in multiple classrooms allowed me to work as a teaching assistant, as well as a peer mentor. I find it very rewarding to work with different age groups within the school, as well as students with various special needs and disabilities.

Post high school into my college career I began volunteering at Pegasus Theraputic Riding Center in Brewster New York where I found a happy marriage between my equestrian knowledge and my knowledge of people with disabilities! I am in college pursuing my degree in communications. I work with both Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Center as well as Gallop NYC. These programs help raise awarness that individuals riding in the therapeutic riding programs can compete on the international scale. With my life I hope to help redefine how people with any form of disability are viewed in society and help to empower people whether they are physically disabled or able-bodied to pursue and accomplish their goals!

Awards

Over the years I have been honored to earn awards such as the 2014 FEI Against All Odds Award as well as the 2014 Junior Equestrian Of The Year for pursuing my passion of Paradressage. I cherish the opportunity I have to carry on the legacy of these prestigious awards through my riding and my goals in the future!
